An important meeting between the KDA and a World Bank delegation regarding the provision of safe travel facilities for women and girls, and an improved urban environment.

An important meeting was held at the Civic Center under the chairmanship of Director General Karachi Development Authority Zainul Abideen Ansari regarding the ongoing World Bank review on safe transportation of women and girls and easy access to public places under the Karachi Mobility Project (Yellow Line BRT). The meeting was attended by KDA Chief Engineer, Director Land Management and Director Planning and Urban Design, as well as representatives of the World Bank and Karachi Mobility Project. The delegation included World Bank Transport Specialist Bilal Paracha, World Bank Consultants Yousaf Munir, Huba Sheikh, Fatima Ehsan and Reja Haider, Gender Specialist Karachi Mobility Project Yellow Line BRT Hira Nazir and Assistant Director Karachi Mobility Project Ghufran Khan. The meeting discussed in detail the ongoing initiatives of KDA towards providing a safe, accessible and conducive urban environment for women and girls and the possibilities of playing a more effective role in the future. On this occasion, important issues such as beautification and better use of spaces under bridges, construction of safe and quality routes for pedestrians, improvement of traffic signals by KDA’s Traffic Engineering Bureau, removal of encroachments obstructing pedestrian movement and ensuring installation of street lights in development projects came under consideration. The meeting emphasized that during the planning and implementation of urban development projects, special importance should be given to the safety, convenience and easy movement of all citizens, including women and girls, while roads and public places should be designed to ensure the safety, convenience and ease of movement of all citizens, including women and girls. Lighting and other necessary facilities should be improved by identifying dark areas and places where there is a risk of difficulties or insecurity in transportation. It was agreed in the meeting that practical measures for the promotion of safe, comprehensive and improved urban travel facilities in Karachi can be made more effective through effective communication and mutual cooperation between the relevant institutions. ‎
